60 × 90cm
Acrylic on stretched canvas and ready to hang.
In this acrylic painting, I’ve focused on capturing the dynamic and organic forms of water in motion. Layers of turquoise, teal, and aqua provide a base that feels both fresh and calm, while contrasting dark and earthy tones add depth, giving the impression of underwater rocks or shadows playing beneath the surface.
My Process
To create this piece, I used a mix of palette knives and brushes to build texture and movement. Starting with a deep turquoise base, I layered lighter shades to create a sense of transparency and depth, almost as if you’re looking down into shallow, moving water. For the darker shadows and earthy hues, I used a combination of dry brushing and palette knife strokes, which give the impression of rougher, natural textures like rock formations or sandbanks underneath the water. I added hints of white and muted browns to evoke the look of gentle waves and shifting sands.
How This Piece Might Enhance a Room
This painting would add a refreshing, coastal energy to a room, making it feel both open and tranquil. The colors are vibrant yet balanced, perfect for a space that could use a touch of liveliness without overwhelming the senses. I see it working beautifully in a living room or bedroom, where its serene color palette would create a soothing atmosphere while the textures and movement add a subtle sense of energy.
General Feeling
The overall feeling is one of calm and connection to nature. The soft blues and earthy tones feel grounding yet uplifting, inviting viewers to imagine the sounds of water lapping against the shore or the sensation of sand beneath their feet. It’s a piece that encourages relaxation and a moment of escape, bringing a gentle yet powerful presence to any space.
This painting is reminiscent of the waters off the south coastal town of Esperance ,where I spent the first two years of my teaching career.
